About vehicle classes

  • Vehicle classes
  • Vehicle class glossary
  • Interstate travel

The tolls you pay depend on your vehicle’s class and the distance you travel. In Victoria, a vehicle class is determined by the total size, weight and configuration of your vehicle.

Info
Vehicle class remains the same when towing a caravan or trailer.

Vehicle classes

Motorcycles

Two-wheeled motor vehicles, including trailers & side cars.

Cars

Four-wheeled motor vehicles with a monocoque (single chassis) construction.

Most modern passenger cars and sports cars utilise monocoque construction.

Light commercial vehicles (LCV)

Two-axle motor vehicles with a cab chassis construction, with a gross vehicle mass that is between 1.5–4.5 tonnes.

Cab chassis construction vehicles could include utes, goods vans and panel vans, see below glossary for more examples.

Heavy commercial vehicles (HCV)

Motor vehicles that are:

  • Two-axle motor vehicles with a cab chassis construction and a gross vehicle mass of more than 4.5 tonnes

Your vehicle’s gross vehicle mass (GVM) can be located on your vehicle’s compliance plate or certificate and is usually stated in your vehicle’s owner manual.

  • Chassis construction types

A cab chassis is a vehicle that comes with a cab (the driver's compartment) and a chassis (the frame), which can be with and without a back on it (e.g. tray, tub, Ford Ranger).

    Cab chassis vehicles:

    Monocoque chassis (single frame) vehicles:

  • Rigid truck

Has two-axle sets, a driver's position, a steering system, motive power and a single rigid chassis.

  • Articulated truck

Is made of two sections (e.g. a tractor and a trailer connected by a pivoted bar).

  • Axle

A central shaft fixed to the wheels rotating with them.

The way your trips are classified may differ from state to state, depending on what road you’re travelling on. Find out more about vehicle classifications in Sydney and Brisbane.
