The safety of our customers is our number one priority. We monitor our toll roads 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week and conduct regular equipment checks and maintenance across our toll road network.
If you break down or have an accident on a road, bridge or in a tunnel, 24/7 safety cameras will alert our control room operators and we’ll send out an incident response unit to assist you right away.
Other innovations such as electronic signage, variable speed limits, radio re-broadcasting and over-height vehicle detections let you know what's happening on the road ahead, preventing bottlenecks and keeping you safe.
Our tunnels are equipped with world-class tunnel safety features including incident detection and response systems, fire safety, emergency phones, public address radio, emergency exits, variable speed limits and real-time electronic message signs.
Breakdowns on motorways and in tunnels can disrupt traffic and be a safety hazard. Keep your vehicle maintained and read our simple tips for driving in tunnels or during a breakdown to help keep you and other travellers safe.
We use motorway management systems that allows us to change speed limits, close lanes and provide travel information in response to what’s happening on the road.
Sometimes we need to lower speed limits or close lanes to ensure the safety of motorists, response teams or our road workers. It's the law for motorists to adhere to the posted speed limit and not drive in closed lanes.

The reality of climate change means we cannot — and have not — been sitting idly by without reducing our use of non-renewable-materials and energy. We’re redesigning the materials and methods we use with the goal of transforming our environmental impacts and bringing them ever closer to net zero.
This reimagining of our operations extends to the protections we give to local flora and fauna, and to reducing the impact of noise and air pollution on communities living near our roads.
Transurban’s purpose is to strengthen communities through transport. Our customers, local communities and employees are all important stakeholders in this vision. Making sure we maintain good air quality on our roads and projects is vital to the liveability, health and safety of neighbouring communities.
We're required to meet stringent environmental measures within operational tunnels, which are reported to and enforced by the relevant authority in each state. These monitoring and reporting requirements vary for our different roads and tunnels.
For most tunnels, we monitor and report on:
