New citybound express lanes are now open on Melbourne’s West Gate Freeway as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project.
The lanes provide a smoother express route to the West Gate Bridge and improve road safety by removing the ability for drivers to merge and weave across lanes at the last minute.
What this means for you
As you approach the M80 interchange, you’ll need to make your way into the correct lanes for your destination:
- Keep right to take the new express lanes to the West Gate Bridge.
- Keep left to exit at Millers Road and Williamstown Road.
Once you’re in the express lanes you won’t be able to exit the freeway. Pay attention to road signage and choose your lane early.

Vehicles weighing more than 68.5T can’t travel over the West Gate Bridge.
