Dangerous goods don’t belong in tunnels

We’ve noticed an increased number of heavy vehicles carrying dangerous goods attempting to travel in WestConnex tunnels - especially on the new Sydney Airport connection via Qantas Drive to the WestConnex M8 and M4.

While we monitor the motorway 24/7 and can assist customers when needed, placarded vehicles are not allowed in tunnels or on roads connecting to tunnels.

Dangerous goods like petrol, fertiliser, paint-tin contents, jerry cans and other liquid substances are very high-risk - if spilled, they cause an increased risk of serious accidents and can enter the tunnels' drainage systems, causing pollution.

To ensure tunnel safety, the following vehicles are not permitted in tunnels:

  • Vehicles and loads exceeding 4.6m in height
  • Vehicles carrying commercial quantities of dangerous goods
  • Any vehicle displaying a dangerous goods placard
  • Mopeds
  • Tractors

Always take an alternate route that is available. For heavy vehicle travel in NSW, visit the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator website.
